Yume no Bushi - Dream of the Warrior

By Rich Jones

These are a set of Samurai skirmish rules that I have written primarily to work with the excellent 42mm figures released by Steve Barber. But the rules will also work with smaller scales.

Don’t expect a super detailed set of skirmish rules giving you which bit of the lung was punctured by the thrust of the sword. All the rules are concerned about is if a character is out of the action or can carry on. Hopefully this is what is delivered.

Another design objective was to produce a game that can be played (even with 42mm figures) on a small area. 4 foot square is fine, with 28mm figures even 2 foot square will be OK. The game is designed to last an hour or less and have plenty going on. As well as one of fun games I designed them with a mind to eventually developing a character advancement and campaign system. These are currently a ‘work in progress’.

On first glance there seems to be a lot of Japanese terminology. I make no apologies for this. As a Primary School teacher I use technical terms and vocabulary all the time so the students get used to it, hoping it will sink in over time. Same with this game, you don’t need to use the terms, you don’t need them for the game, but in the end they will sink in.

The weapons and figure types revolve around the figures you can get in 42mm at present. As more types come out I’ll add them to the rules. Also in the very near future I will give stats for mythical creatures and characters from folklore to add to your games. My over all objective is to produce a game which is fun to play and will get you dreaming of being that warrior hero I know you really wish you were.

Have fun…

FUBAR

By Rich Jones

After the creation of our 5.56mm modern skirmish rules the race was on to create a set of WWII rules based around the same gaming mechanism. Two of our writers were put together and asked to create a great set of rules.

So of course they ignored the editor and did their own thing. FUBAR is the result of Rich Jones work and can be downloaded now.

5.56mm Fast Play Modern Skirmish Rules

I didn’t plan to write complete skirmish game, it just sort of happened. The editor Neil Fawcett had asked me to write a scenario based upon an idea he’d had that was a little unconventional to say the least, and we were going to need some mechanics to handle a variety of unusual situations. So I set about jotting down some rule ideas, just for use with that particular scenario, mind you.

Men At Arms - new rules for Warmaster

These are an excellent set of additional rules that can be used to augment the Warmaster 10mm rules from Games Workshop. In the words of John P Kelly, the author of Men At Arms: "They do not noticeably slow the game down yet they provide for a better simulation of melee based historical combat. A vigorous attempt was made to minimise the changes made to the rules. The changes do allow one to properly command a battle line, but yet they limit one's control of the troops."

We'd recommend taking a look at these addendum rules if you are a player of Warmaster, a set of rules that we at Wargames Journal believe deserve more credit than they receive.

Card Markers for Mr Lincoln's War

These excellent markers were kindly sent it by one of readers - Mr Mark Jones from Dorset. He points out that the downloadable file contains a complete set of colour game markers for the Mr Lincoln's War American Civil War rules.

He explains: "I have printed them off on to photo quality paper, (the whole sheet prints on to one side of A4), glued the markers on to 2mm MDF and covered them with clear sticky backed plastic (shades of Blue Peter)." We’ll be creating more markers like this in future issues of Wargames Journal and if anyone else out there is feeling a surge of ‘Blue Peter’ inspiration then feel free to follow Mark’s example and send them in.

Thanks for your contribution Mark.

Vietnam Fast Play Rules

Our second set of wargaming rules for you to download and give a try are called Nam 69 and as you would guess from this name they cover teh gruelling combat zone that was Vietnam. The focus of the rules is 'fast play' and therefore we don't claim that they are all encompassing, rather thay they will give a good feel for 'fast' combat in a hungle combat zone.

We have provided the core rules, various 'cards' which you can print out and use to enhance playbility and we are planning more cards in the future. These rules are also open to conversion and we'd love to hear from you if you add to them yourself.

Dark Age Flags

We asked the chaps at Gripping Beast to create us some high quality banners that you can download and use to grace the tabletop alongside your Dark Age armies. Darren from BG - the talented one - was given the task and he's done us proud. This is what he had to say about his creations:

"There is not a huge amount of info about dark age banners and what personality had what. But we can make some up using the various bits of arms and armour, jewellery, cloth etc that we do have access to.

It's highly probable that the sort of work that went onto everyday items would possibly end up on a banner or two. There are various references to authentic banner designs such as the Golden Dragon of Wessex, Harold Godwinsons fighting man, the papal banner etc.... These and others will follow in some form or other at some point from GB.

I have made the flags quite big so as to make an impact on the table top, but feel free to reduce them, or enlarge them, depending upon your personal tastes. The first design is a typical knot work gripping beast (style of art, not the company) design. It can be used for most armies of the Dark Age period, but will look particularly good with a Celtic one.

The second design is based on an image taken from a 7th Century helmet from Vendel, Sweden. More than likely represents Odin and his Ravens Huginn and Munnin. This one would make a fine battle standard for a Viking/Early Saxon force."

Darren also had some ideas to help you mount said flags:

"Cut out the banners and paste PVA glue to one side and then wrap around the banner pole and press together, pinching in around the pole. When it's nearly dry paint any exposed edges and then bend to shape. If you want more flexibility you can stick the banner to a piece of foil (wine bottles provide a good source of material) as do puree tubes (clean!) or just normal tin foil. Once you've stuck the banner to the material and it is dry just follow the instructions as per normal.

The black flag has been deliberately painted with an overlapping edge so that you can cut a 'ragged' edge to it."
