The English Setup and Order of Battle
The English have been taken by surprise whilst on the march and are unprepared for a pitched fight. They should be deployed in a staggered column in the centre of the table of no more than three abreast. Forsythe and Hopkins should be at the head of the column but otherwise there are no restrictions as to how the rest should be deployed.
The English player has two ways that he can win the day, either by slaying or routing his opposition or by escaping from the East side of the board. There is no correct way out of the two and the “better” way will be dependent on how the two players use their forces. Bear in mind that the musket’s inability to move and shoot means that some careful planning might prove decisive.
The English force consists of two battalions of 16 men. In each battalion there are 8 Line, 4 Grenadier and 4 Light infantry units. In addition to this the English have two heroes, Forsythe and Hopkins. The heroism of the former remains to be seen. .
In addition to their normal forces the English have the possibility of some additional help by allied natives in the form of a scouting party. At the beginning of each turn, beginning on the second, the English player rolls a D6. If the dice roll is a 6, a small group of friendly natives is deployed at any table edge other than the Eastern side.
This group consists of 1D3+3 natives, 1 of which carries a musket. Use the Mohican statistics for these troops:
Captain James L. Forsythe
The young son of a wealthy general, Forsythe would rather be entertaining than fighting. He is neither brave nor strong, but he will do his duty for England.
Weapons: Musket
Sergeant Edmund Hopkins
Hopkins is grim and battle-hardened who has no love for his country other than the money it pays him, but he is brave and loyal to his men without question.
Weapons: Musket
English Line
Far away from home fighting seemingly endless conflicts. Some will be bitter, others will just not care but all share the desire not to be scalped by a savage.
Weapons: Musket
English Grenadier
The crème de la crème of the British forces, the Grenadiers are the best shots and the best dressers.
Weapons: Musket
English Light
Skirmishers and scouts more adept at woodland manoeuvres than their brethren.
Weapons: Musket
Special: Light infantry benefit from the same special movement rules as the Mohicans.
The Mohican Setup and Order of Battle
The Mohican forces are divided into two equal parts that setup in both deployment zones flanking the English. The objective of the Mohican player is simple enough: to kill as many Englishman as possible. The strength of the Mohicans lies in their hand-to-hand prowess and when they get up close to the English they will massacre them with comfortable ease.
However, the Mohicans ranged ability is limited to a few muskets and of course the tomahawks, but using the latter as a thrown weapon should first be carefully considered. The English muskets will undoubtedly cause many casualties amongst the Mohicans and if they tarry too long getting into combat there might be too few to see the job through.
The Mohican force consists of 2 Chiefs, 8 Musketeers and 38 Warriors.
Mohican Chief
Strong in both arms and mind, he has seen his homeland become the battlefield for the wars of foreigners. It is time for vengeance.
Weapons: Tomahawk
Mohican Musketeer
Firearms are new to the natives of North America and they have yet to master them, but even in unskilled hands they can be deadly.
Weapons: Musket, tomahawk
Mohican Warrior
Young men from their tribe eager to fight the invaders to their land and prove themselves in battle.
Weapons: Tomahawk
Winning the Battle
The English side wins the battle once any of the following conditions are met:
- Half the English force manages to exit the Eastern edge of the table.
- Both Mohican Chiefs are either slain or retreating and 50% of the Mohican force is slain or retreating.
- 75% of the Mohican force is either slain or retreating.
The Mohican side wins the battle once any of the following conditions are met.
- All English units are slain or fleeing
- Forsythe is killed and 75% of the English units are slain or fleeing.
If the English manage to escape from the Eastern edge of the table with less than 50% of their men alive the game can be said to be a draw.
