U-PLAY SPORTS
Two Hour Wargames
Not really a review, but an excited preview! Readers will already know of my enthusiasm for the different products from Two Hour Wargames (THW). Being privy to the firm’s play testing I have known for some time that the core rules creator, Ed Teixeira, was messing with using the THW ‘reaction dice’ mechanics for sports. Indeed he originally developed the system for a sports game to play with a mate … so maybe it has gone full circle! Anyway after playing his ‘indoor’ football game (a concept alien to us Brits unless you have caught it on cable TV) the idea obviously caught on and he has now expanding the idea to cover other contact ball games. I was pretty convinced the mechanisms would work well.
Then a couple of days ago in my mailbox I received a test copy of ‘Hit Somebody’ the THW boxing game! So there was me desperately trying to ‘do’ stuff for the WJ re-launch, my real work of teaching and trying to get in games of Field of Glory (FoG) when boxing took over. A quick visit to Toys r Us for some mini WWF figures, a bit of Greenstuff for boxing belts and gloves and I was away!
The game plays superbly and quickly and feels like you are watching/participating in a prize fight. I will not give too much away in case things are ‘tweaked’ before release, but the test version is ideal for beating up a friend or family member or even going solo - the NPC boxer generation mechanics are excellent!
The final version will no doubt have the normal superb campaign system built-in that THW rules usually do and I believe you will eventually be able to play as a fighter, manager or even promoter! It plays very quickly which means it will be ideal for club night tournaments. We have one planned already! A WJ ‘Enter the Dragon’ (or should that be ‘Enter with Drag On’) event using some marvellous martial arts figures is planned for later on in the year.
So keep your eyes peeled out for an update and any breaking news – and Sports Fans … YOU WILL HEAR IT HERE FIRST … possibly, unless of course I have someone trapped on the ropes and am busy giving them a few body shots!
