Another week of excitement at WJ HQ. I got together with Neil Fawcett for a few days of work, which in this case involved playing a 28mm game of Ambush Alley and working on a few magazine ideas. Hard work, but someone has to do it!
Fresh into the office this week are a set of rules from the League of Augsburg called Beneath the Lilly Banners. Written by Barry Hilton this set of fast play rules is lavishly produced and has been passed on for an in depth review. For more information to keep you going until the review please see http://www.leagueofaugsburg.com
Another job on the cards for the next few days is playing and reviewing the latest set of Ancients rules, IMPETUS by Lorenzo Sartori of Dadio & Piombo. Lorenzo is promising fast play (about an hour at 300 points starter armies) and an enjoyable system (buying destiny/fate re-rolls sounds fun, especially as I can make Shaun, my gaming mate, re-roll his passes!) so we will see if he delivers on his promise. Wargames Journal has a pre-publication version to review and we will endeavour to get this too you BEFORE Salute, where the English version is officially released. Again hard work but you readers are worth it!
My Middle Eastern buildings destined for more modern fire fight action in 12mm have arrived from King & Kerr so watch out for a battle report using them when I have had time to paint them up.
On a personal note I’ve been working on a project that I can’t say too much about, but if I tell you it is a fast and furious, simple to play skirmish game, needing only a 2’x 2’ table in 12mm to a 4’ x 4’ in 28/36mm, set in my favourite Wargaming period and will be available as rules for miniatures and a board game for newbies … well a lot of you will be able to guess what it will involve. Watch out for a full rundown in Issue 10.
With only a week left to Salute the excitement mounts – what with all the new releases to be picked up and people to chat to I am in for a busy day! Hopefully I will be wandering around in a WJ shirt or failing that a black and fluro yellow ‘Are you serious’ T-shirt with a camera and obligatory back pack; so if you see me stop me for a chat, I would love to meet you!
Until then … keep well and keep those dice a rollin’ – otherwise I have it on good authority the sky will fall on our heads, the authority being a Gaul leader from the Asterix books … but can we afford to risk it?
